                                                    National Awards

Bharat Ratna
It is the highest civilian award of India. It was established in 1954. It is conferred for exceptional service or performance. Initially it was limited to public service, arts, literature and science, But since 2011 it was expanded to any exceptional service. A maximum of 3 per year can be awarded. In some years it may not be awarded. The first awardees in 1954 were C.Rajagopalachari, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and C.V.Raman
Padma Vibhushan
It is the second highest civilian award of India. It was established in 1954. It is conferred for exceptional and distinguished service.
Padma Bhushan
It is the third highest civilian award of India. It was established in 1954. It is conferred for distinguished service of high order.
Padma Shri
It is the fourth highest civilian award of India. It was established in 1954. It is conferred in recognition of distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity.
Param Vir Chakra
It is the highest military decoration in India. It was established in 1950. It is awarded for the most conspicuous bravery in the presence of the enemy.
Maha Vir Chakra
It is the second highest military decoration in India. It is awarded for conspicuous bravery in the presence of the enemy.
Vir Chakra
It is the third highest military decoration in India. It is awarded for acts of gallantry in the presence of the enemy
Ashoka Chakra
It is awarded for the most conspicuous bravery, or some daring act or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice otherwise than in the presence of the enemy. It is awarded for military or civilian personnel.

Kirti Chakra
It is awarded for conspicuous bravery otherwise than in the presence of the enemy. It is awarded for military or civilian personnel
Shaurya Chakra
It is awarded for bravery otherwise than in the presence of the enemy. It is awarded for military or civilian personnel
Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award
It is the award for lifetime achievement in sports and games. It is the highest award for sports and games. It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It was established in 2002.
Arjuna Award
It is awarded for outstanding performance in sports and games. It is the second highest award for sports and games. It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It was established in 1961.
Dronacharya Award
It is awarded for outstanding coaches in sports and games. It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It was established in 1985.
Dadasaheb Phalke Award
It is awarded for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema. It is the highest award in India in the field of cinema. It was first awarded in 1969.
Jnanpith Award
It is awarded for outstanding contribution to literature in any of the languages included in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution and in English. It was first awarded in 1965.
Sahitya Academy Award
It is awarded annually for outstanding works of literature published in any of the 22 languages of the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution and the languages of English and Rajasthani. It was established in 1954.
Golden Peacock Award
It is awarded for contribution in the field of Corporate Governance and Sustainability. It was established by the Institute of Directors, India in 1991.

Nobel Prize
It is named after Alfred Nobel and was being awarded from 1901. The Nobel prizes were initially given in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace. From 1969 the field of economic sciences has been added to the list. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences presents the awards in Physics, Chemistry and Economic Sciences. The Swedish Academy presents the award in Literature. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute presents the award for Physiology or Medicine. The Norwegian Nobel Committee presents the award for Peace
Pulitzer Prize
It is named after Joseph Pulitzer and was established in 1917. It is conferred annually for achievements in journalism, literature and musical composition within United States of America. It is presented by Columbia University
Booker Prize
It is awarded annually for the best novel written in English and published in United Kingdom or Ireland.
Ramon Magsaysay Award
It is named after Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay and was established in 1957. From 1958 to 2008 it was conferred annually in categories viz; Government Service, Public Service, Community Leadership, Journalism, Literature, Creative and Communication Arts, Peace and International Understanding. It is being conferred annually from 2001 in new category Emergent Leadership. From 2009 all categories except the Emergent Leadership category were discarded
Academy Awards (Oscar Awards)
They are awarded for excellence in cinematic achievements all over the world. They were given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. They were first given in 1929.
Grammy Awards
They were awarded to recognize the outstanding achievements in the music industry worldwide. They were first given in 1959.
